What might go wrong with your application to German universities?

The blissful feeling that you get when you get an admit from your dream university is priceless. But, many of your friends, colleagues, acquaintances won’t know the struggle that you had underwent to get that admit. What if, you aren’t able to get an admit? What will you do? What are the things that may go wrong with your application? Let me explain the pitfalls to you.

  1. Finding the right courses:
To begin with, this the first step that many of the students go wrong. I agree that DAAD offers an excellent database of courses that are available. But, many of the students do not know to go through the course website and get to know the subjects.

For example, if a student has a degree in Electronics and wants to pursue Masters in Image processing domain. He will goto the DAAD website and search for Image processing. The thing here is that, there won’t be a course titled as “Masters in Image processing”. So after tedious searching, the student settles for a course in Computational Engineering or Communication systems.

The point here is that, there is no use in coming to Germany and then realizing that the course you chose was not your cup of tea and you can’t waste one more year. So, be aware of all the aspects before you choose a course.
  2. Course website:
When you had already narrowed-down to the courses of your interest, you need to go through the course website, which will normally be in German language and you need to Google Translate it, where some important informations will be miscommunicated. Another herculean task is to find the right webpage which has all the details of the course, because the university website will have a lot of information and you need to know your way through it. Nowadays, there are universities that offer the course websites in English, but you need to know to find the right URL for it.

  3. Documents:
Starting from your CV and Statement of Purpose, everything needs to be according to European standards and not in the way you apply in your country. All the documents must be professional and there should be no place for mistakes. Most of the students are lethargic in their documents, which cost them their admits.

Why is this so important? Because your documents are the only materials that is going to convince the University to give you admit. For many universities, you won’t even have a chance to speak with the admissions committee and hence there is no other way for them to know your ambition and career goals.
  4. Application:
Most of the universities have their application in English, but still some universities have German application forms. Also, there are many terms that the students do not understand and when they enter the wrong information, it will definitely lead them to the road to rejection. This applies to both Online and Postal applications.
  5. Post/Mail:
You might fill the application correctly, get all your documents properly and also send it via the best couriers/mails. But, you need to take utmost care of the address, the person and the department at the University, to which you need to send your application.

How will the admission committee decide on your application, if they hadn’t received it at the first place? And if you send it to a different department within same university, they will not forward it to the correct department.

As mentioned earlier, your application is the only thing that is going to help you “sell” to the admission committee. Although you might have a stellar profile, if you do not know how to polish it and portray well in your application, you "might" end up with nothing. So always be careful with your applications.
