The German student visa is granted only if you have 8500+ Euros in your blocked bank account. The German government believes that, this amount will be sufficient for a student to survive in Germany for a year. But, in reality how much does it cost for a student to live in Germany? Let's see the monthly & yearly expenditure of an average student living in Germany.
RENT:
Depending on the location of the university, this may vary from 220 - 400 euros per month. If you are going to live in a small city like Chemnitz, Magdeburg, etc., then the rent will be around 220 - 250 euros per month. But, if you are going to live in bigger cities like Berlin, Munich, etc., most of the times you will not get the rooms at Studentenwerk(University hostels); therefore you will be applying for some WG(shared appartment), which might cost you little more than 300 - 350 euros

Average annual expense: 3600 EUROS
HEALTH INSURANCE:
Health insurance is compulsory in Germany, without which you cannot register yourself in the University. Therefore, when you apply for Public health insurances like TK, AOK, etc., they will charge around 90-100 EUROS per month. There are some students who opt for the private health insurances, but it is always advisable to go for the public insurance since it will be hassle-free and doesn't have much paper-work too.

FOOD:
The expenses for FOOD varies from person to person, but on an average it costs around 100-150 EUROS per student. It also depends on your food habits and how many times you eat outside, because it will cost you more if you always eat in restaurants. It is advisable to cook food, which is healthy and also cost effective.Average monthly expense: 120 EUROS

TRAVEL:
When you are in Europe with Schengen VISA, you will obviously tend to travel a lot. And European summers are something to die for. There are many STUDENT TRIPS available in Germany, who arrange for short trips across Europe at student prices. If you are not interested in visiting European countries, you will at least go back to your home country once in a year.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The miscellaneous expense category will have the other small expenses like paying for washing machine, restaurants, shopping, etc.,

In total, an average student may spend around 7600 EUROS per year. Of course, this may vary according to your lifestyle, habits, etc., Also, if you are living in big cities then you have to shell out a lot for Rent which will make your expenses go high.
