Germany VS Singapore

Which country is better? Germany VS Singapore | Masters studies | MS course
Deciding a path to choose, when you have lot of options in hand is very difficult. When you are applying for Masters studies, there would be a lot of confusion in terms of which country to apply for and there was a question in Quora regarding Germany VS Singapore. Trust me, even I was in the same dilemma when I wanted to pursue my Masters course. Let me throw some light on the analysis that I had done, based on my experience in Germany(Masters studies) and my observations from my friends who are studying in Singapore.

Climate:

Are you a person who likes Winters to be cold(around 0 degree Celsius)? Are you a person who likes to just have 2 months of Summer? If you’re from a tropical country, then there is high possibility that you will not like Germany’s climate, but on the other hand Singapore has similar tropical conditions, which makes it easier to adapt.
Winner: Singapore

Course duration:

Most of the courses in Germany needs the student to complete a Research project/Internship along with a Master Thesis, due to which it might take more than 2 years to complete the course. This completely depends on the candidate and there are people who complete there studies in 2 years also.

On the other hand, the courses in Singapore(course-work) can be completed within a year also. But mostly they don’t offer Thesis or Internship in the syllabus, which is a advantange and disadvantage - discussed in the next point.
Winner: Germany(Reason in next point)

Thesis:

The courses in Germany requires the students to complete a 6 month Master Thesis to graduate successfully. Though it might elongate your study plan, it gives the opportunity to get more practical exposure and train you in the latest trends in your field. Writing a Master Thesis is a herculean task, but still it makes you a better graduate.
Winner: Germany

Language:

Though the course that you choose might be completely taught in English, you still need to learn German to survive in Germany. And especially when you are not in the bigger cities, it would be very difficult to communicate and socialize. Language is one of the biggest concerns for Internationals, when thinking about spending their next 2–3 years for studies.

On the other hand, it would be very easy for anyone to survive with English in Singapore.
Winner: Singapore

Education Cost:

Germany is quite popular for providing FREE education, which hugely reduces the burdens of loans for the students. But still, it would cost around 8500+ Euros per year to stay in Germany(living expenses). There are also scholarships for Germany provided by DAAD.

Singapore doesn’t offer FREE courses and thus, there might be tution fees to be paid. But I have heard that, there are scholarships that reduce these costs.
Winner: Germany

Food:

If you’re from Asian countries, you are definitely going to miss your FOOD in Germany. This can be one of the major reasons for you to feel home-sick. But Singapore offers a lot more, in terms of cuisines and it is easy to get asian flavours.
Winner: Singapore

Culture:

It is a popular notion that, Germans respect privacy and thus not open-going. It would be difficult to break the ice and socialize. But, once you break the initial barrier, then you are in for a life-long ride(friendship). There are much more things that might strike as culture-shock for someone coming from the Eastern part of the world. I assume, the Singaporeans are more easy-going and not that difficult to get along as in the case of the Germans.
Winner: Singapore

At the end of the day, it depends on which topics you give importance to. There are some of my Indian friends, who prefer to stay close-by to home and thus chose Singapore. Then, there is me who gave more importance to the Thesis part of the studies and wanted to explore new cultures.

I feel German is the winner due to their high standards in previous years and their industries in Automobile such as Mercedes, Audi and many more
Germany is well-known for its manufacturing of high-end goods. Mechanical engineers from Germany have always had an excellent reputation and are highly in demand worldwide. 'Made in Germany' is a cachet and this is also because of the high numbers of exported goods .
