Got many admits? How to choose the best university? | Advice from Seniors | Studying in Germany

Hello! We have started this series of articles - Advice from Seniors, in order to enlighten the aspirants to choose the best thing for their career. The first article will focus on 'choosing the right university' and find the tips and advice from our side below:

Please note that, whatever advice/opinion presented in this article is solely the opinion of the author from his own experiences and observations. If the reader has a difference in opinion, the author of this article duely respects it

By the time you read this article, if you have got one or more admits in the German universities and are worried about choosing the best one for your career, then this article will be of great help for you. Let us see some scenarios and let me give you an reality check.

Scenario - 1

You got an admit in a Hochschule/FachHochschule(FH) at a remote town in Germany and you choose to pursue that course, because of the subjects and job prospects for that field. You need to understand that, if the FH is located at a remote place then you will not have proper transportation to the place. For instance, if you have an personal interview you will need to catch 4-5 connections in order to reach the bigger cities like Munich, Frankfurt, etc., Also, in general the shops/supermarkets in Germany will close at 20:00 hours on everyday and on Sundays you cannot expect them to be open. But, in smaller towns there will be fewer supermarkets and most of the shops will close at 18:00 hours. Moreover, these smaller towns will not have good connectivity and the public transportation like bus, tram, etc., will also be sparse. If you miss a bus after 18:00 hours, you might need to wait for one or two hours to catch the next connection.

All these kinds of things will affect you studies, because if you are living 2 kilometers away from the university and if you have an early morning class, then you need to get up early and catch the proper transportation and then come back home soon, which will eventually make it harder for you to socialize. Trust me, you will find much more problems during Winter.

Moreover you cannot find the companies related to your field, because you could only find production based companies in and around smaller towns. Also, since it is FH there won't be much of research happening in the university and you have to move somewhere else to do an internship or thesis.

Average expenses per month - 450 - 500 euros (approx.)
Eg: Hochschule Mittweida

Scenario - 2

You got admit in TU9 universities and irrespective of the size of the town, the area will be developed or fastly developing solely due to the TU present in the location. For instance, if you got an admit in TU Munich there is no need to think about the rest and you can opt for it. Places like Munich has far better public transport, social life and shops in and around. Also, there are many companies in the outskirts of the city and it will be easier to find part-time jobs as well.

But, still places like Munich will be hell if you do not have a room/place to stay. It is very difficult to find a room at student rates in these bigger cities and also the rent for the rooms are way higher on a comparative basis.

Average expenses per month: 700-800 euros (approx)
Eg: TU Munich, RWTH AACHEN

Scenario - 3

You got admit in a FH, where the course is very good and also you can find one or two companies related to your field in the area. These kind of places will be on the verge of development due to the companies and FH present in the area; nevertheless you will still find problems like lack of public transport, less number of shops, nothing much to socialize and no proper opportunity to settle down in that place.

For instance, FH KÄRNTEN in Villach has Infineon, Intel and some research institute in the vicinity; but still the place doesn't have proper public transportation and hence it will be very difficult for you to go to classes during winter. Also, in these types of places it will be quite difficult to find accomodation and if you thinking about staying in a WG, then you need to search hard.

Average expenses per month: 500-600 euros(approx)
Eg: Carinthia University of Applied Sciences

Irrespective of the location of the university, there will always be some pros and cons. It is upto the applicant to decide on which kind of university to choose and carry out his studies. Because I have seen many students, regretting their decision after coming to Germany, this series of articles will be my humble way of giving back to the students.

    1. As far as job opportunities are concerned, it is the same for all universities. If you have better experience in that domain with respect to more projects, internships, etc., you will find it easy. When it comes to TU, then you have the possibility of research as well. On the whole, please do not worry about jobs now; but start worrying about the subjects and projects that you would like to take up.

Thanks a lot for your compliment, I am working hard to get this portal to reach to more aspirants and any help regarding the same are welcome ;)

  4. I have admission to Universität Paderborn for master's in international management and economics. How do u find Universität Paderborn and the place.?
Also I was supposed to travel to Universität Paderborn this April 2017 but unfortunately I couldn't pass the visa interview.
The reason: stated is there are serious doubts about your purpose of stay.
This is my rejection the 2nd time.
During first attempt it was another hochschule Fulda for the same master's course.
I got rejected due to inadequate language certificate of German C1 as the 60% course was in German and 40 % in English.
Can you tell me how to crack the visa process this time ,as I would goin in July for visa interview.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Germany has one of the easiest VISA process. Please bear these points for your next VISA interview:
      - Have proper docs
      - Do some research about the course, about the modules, place, etc.,
      - Learn some German sentences
      - Be confident
These are some of my advice. I am not an authorized VISA personnel, so at time it may vary. All these points are based on my experience and observations.

You will ROCK!! Don't worry. Stay confident

P.S: This is just my personal opinion

    2. This is an international Masters course to be taught in English as well as in German, first semster it will be taught in English along with German language courses and subsequent semsters some of the courses will be taught in German. Although the course was designed for International students only, I'm still not getting confidence about studying in German that too technical subjects

      Delete
    3. True!! Studying in German will be difficult, that too if you have to write your exams in technical German; that will be a herculean task. If you have a strong-hold on German language, then you can go ahead.

I suggest you to go through your course module and check whether you can leave those German subjects as "electives" and study the other subjects in English.

    1. Hello Ms. Kavya,
      Thank you for your comment.

MS in CS with Machine learning is a very good field of choice. I would suggest you to go through DAAD website first to find out all the related courses. There might be some courses that are completely specilizing in Machine learning and some courses where these topics will be a part of the course.

So, you have to do that "research" by yourself, so that you will get to know more about the process also.

Please do go through this post about DAAD: http://bit.ly/daadtutorial

  16. Hello Sir,
Thank you for the honest scenario students face after Landing Germany.

I needed one suggestion. First I would like to explain my scenario.

I got admit (WS 2017) from TU Chemnitz (micro and nano system) having enrollment deadline 2nd February, 2018 and also from Paderborn university (Electrical system engineering) which has enrollment deadline 19 Oct 2017. Now the problem is that, that Mumbai consulate has still not allotted any Visa appointment for interview. They will give me date in September end or October first week. So, I would be Missing my Paderborn admission (1st choice) and have to enroll late at TU chemnitz(2nd choice). Also I have received another admit from kempten university (electrical engineering) for summer 2018. So my doubt is..

    1) Should I take late admission in TU chemnitz. Will I be at loss? Or ask for deferral? How is it to pass out from TU chemnitz micro and nano system course. Job opportunity ?

    2) shall I enroll in TU Chemnitz now and then change to kempten or Paderborn university for next intake after coming to Germany!

    3) or should I directly come to Germany in next semester intake I.e. summer intake 2018?

    4) Out of Paderborn University(4 SEM course) TU Chemnitz (4 sem course) and kempten university (3 sem course) which one should I go for keeping in mind studies, area, job opportunities, safety and living cost?

I would be really grateful if you help me out of my dilemma.

    Thanks in advance!!

    1. Hello Pooja,

If you really want to join the course this semester(WS2017), then I suggest you to contact the university, explain your situation and ask them for a letter stating that you can join later.

Please go through the course modules of both TU Chemnitz and Paderborn university to decide which suits you best; because you should make that decision based on your interests and career goals.

I would suggest you to neglect Kempten Hochschule, as the other admits are much better than this.

Joining one university and then changing to another course in the following semester is something that I wouldn't advise, because it is waste of time, money and energy.

Job opportunities are something that you needn't worry now, since you cannot influence anything now. Whatever course you may study, the job opportunities are same.

Please check out this article for more info: http://www.germanyunofficial.com/2017/04/job-prospects-in-germany-studying-in.html

FREE EDUCATION IN GERMANY!!

Yes!! You heard it right, doing Masters in Germany is mostly free of cost. It is not fully free of cost, but comparatively it is very less than doing Bachelors in most of the countries. As a student, you many have to pay around 300 euros per semester.   In the recent years, Germany has made its education, free of cost. You may ask, how does Germany manage to provide free education, it is very simple. In Germany the people agree to pay high taxes, which they get back as very good services from the government. And moreover, Germany has a lower percentage of students opting for college, contrary to countries like America or India. In fact, from long back, there had been no tuition fees in Germany, but there are still some universities collecting a small amount of fees as a process to speed up the process of completing the degree.  WHY GERMANY? To your surprise, there are other countries like Denmark, Finland, Sweden and some Northern European countries, who provide ...
