Every student doing their Masters are eager to know about the Part-time job opportunities, which is why I wanted to write a separate post for this topic. Who doesn't want some extra money, apart from their usual 8040 euros.
To make it simple, I am confining it into two types. The jobs based on:
- Academics (In the University)
- Non-academics
Academics:
Before searching for jobs outside, first look into your university website properly. Because, there is a high probability that you will find a HiWi job in your university under some department. But, from my experience it is kinda tough to get a HiWi job because, the professor who is going to give the job, should be convinced that you are really capable of doing the certain task and moreover, he should also convince the particular Company which is funding that project.
You can look into various companies like Bosch, Audi, Volkswagen, etc., or companies related to your corresponding field, where you can find Student jobs for certain projects. You can very well apply to that and also you can apply for Internships in companies. For both of these, you will be paid well compared to HiWi jobs.
You can also apply student jobs in sites like:
You can attend various Job-Messe/CarriereCon in different universities and meet the personnel from the companies directly. Sometimes you can apply then and there, or you can at least get a clear view of what the company is expecting,
The good thing about the part-time jobs in academics field is that, you will get paid for doing your job and you will be gaining technical exposure as well. I personally feel that, everyone should try earning via these ways first, if luck was not in your favor, then maybe you can try searching for some Non-academic jobs.
Non-Academic Jobs:
Once you have tried for the academic jobs. Unfortunately when you are out of luck and want to do some Part-time job badly, then you can try the following options.
- Amazon - Amazon in Germany provides jobs for students for various periods of time. This is one of the best option to make quick money. Because Amazon requires students to work full time for like 3 months and they pay you well. They do not expect you to know German. English is fine with them. Their contract terms and conditions are also very lenient and their workplace are well equipped for the workers. You can just go to the given link and apply online.
- Arbeitsagentur - This is the official government website for applying jobs. You can register in this job portal and search for any jobs. They have a variety of jobs and you can even search according to your location.
- Apart from these, you can search for some consultancies in your city and register with them. They will definitely have links with the work places, and they will help you with the job.
It is always better to apply directly on the particular website, so that you will get the full wage. Or else some cents will goto the consultancy. But, when you apply via a consultancy, there are more chances of getting a job, with little less wage. So, it is a trade-off and it will be your call.
It becomes easy for finding jobs, if you are in big cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich. So, it depends on your location also. In the past, i have seen students, moving to another cities for jobs. It all depends on your comfort level.
So, it is not very tough to find a part-time job, but it all depends on you. You need to have certain skill set to get into academics field or you atleast need basic German language, that is because, when someone is willing to give you a job, you at least need to understand the safety instructions, which will be taught to you or shown to you, which will obviously be in German. So, learning German language comes in handy. If you try harder, you can find jobs which doesn't need German also. So, it all depends on how you search. In my opinion, having a part-time job in the academics field is always better.
