Profile Evaluation and Job opportunities in Germany

In the recent times I get lot of requests from many people, who see my answers in Quora or my blog posts, etc., Most of them ask me to evaluate their profile and suggest them universities. If you are also looking out for any profile evaluation services or suggestions, then this blog is for you.

The main questions are:
  1. Can you please evaluate my profile and tell me if I can get an admit?
  2. Can you please suggest me some universities for "so and so" course?
  3. What are the job opportunities after completing the course?

I have answered so many students with these same questions. From my experience, majority of them wanted the following answers:

  1. Yes! Your profile is good and you will get into TU universities
  2. You have to apply only to these "5" universities and you will get an admit for sure.
  3. You will definitely get job and your field is very good.
These are the respective answers that most of them expect, but on the contrary these are my honest answers for the above mentioned questions:
  1. No one can really evaluate your profile, maybe we can tell based on our experience; but that isn't the final call. Also, no one can tell whether you will get admit or not because we do not work in the admission committee.

I have seen guys with just 75% marks getting into TU9 universities and also the guys with 90% not getting an admit. It is just that, you need to modify and polish your SOP and other application documents in such a way, that it convinces the admission committee to choose your application.
  2. When you complete your Bachelor's studies, you maybe into ECE, CS, Mech, IT, EEE, EIE, etc., And you would have studied at least 40 subjects in those course. When it comes to Masters, you can find departments which are focused on each of those 40 subjects.

For eg: If you are asking for the best courses in CS field, I can give you 400 different types of courses which specializes in the field which you may not even heard of; it is always better to do your own research and apply.
  3. Moving over to the Job opportunities part, no one can predict whether you will get job after your course or not. We are not astrologers, we are engineers. Each and every field has job opportunities, it depends on you to work hard and obtain the necessary skills for the job. There is no point in asking someone else regarding your career.

One more thing to add, the German universities are not dumb to have a course which doesn't have job opportunities.

  1. Aravind, can you please write an article about studienkollegs in Germany , and its relevance (or the lack thereof) for MS aspirants.
Can studienkollegs be used to bridge the gap when wishes to pursue his masters in a stream separate from his graduation major (say an ETCE student aspiring for a Masters in Computer Science).
    Thanks.

But, just think, if someone is hiring you for a job, they will definitely expect you to know the German language at least to  a certain level, so that you can interact with your colleagues or take active participation in the group work. Is it a good idea to join the private universities in Germany?

Germany has lot of "public" universities which offer zillion courses in most of the engineering/science disciplines. But still, there are some students who like to apply for the "private" universities which has better acceptance rate on a comparative basis. The application process for these private universities are much simpler and doesn't take much effort. There are some universities which offer good course modules and practical exposure. On an average, most of the private universities ask for tution fees of around 18-20k EUROS for two years, where your living expenses are not included. Thus for two years you would need to spend around 40k EUROS on a whole. Though the private universities charge tution fees, they would not guarantee an job or Campus placement after your studies. Worst case scenario | Your first travel to Germany | What will you do?

My last article was about the Best case scenario of what could happen, when you land in Germany. If you had missed it then, here is a link ( Best case scenario ).Let me simulate the worst case scenario of what could happen and it is just a word of caution to prepare yourself for the worst. Disclaimer: Nothing of this sort will happen to you, but the below scenario is an excerpt from my observations and experiences Worst case scenario: Assumptions: Your semester intake: Winter | Your destination city in Germany : Dresden | Your landing airport: Frankfurt | You have got Rail&Fly offer along with your flight ticket | Your student buddy has agreed to pick you up from the railway station. You started to apply for the winter intake only in the month of March, hence most of the top courses are already way past their deadline. So you settle for some mediocre course and start with all the process of blocked account, VISA, etc., The D-day has come for you to leave to Germ...

Why you should goto Consultancies! (Pun intended)

Everyone are applying for higher studies and going abroad! Many apply on their own, some ask their friends for help, but most of them apply via Consultancies. I am here to explain you, what really happens when you go to consultancies. ~This post is only relatable, if you are applying for Europe or Germany. ~ ~I know this is a long post, please read till the end~ Image source: Google #1 University selections: The consultancies will tell you that, your grades are comparatively low. You can apply for 5 universities and they will take care of the rest and get you an admission. Reality:   The consultancies will not guide you in anyway. They do not know anything about the University or the course. They will not understand your area of specialization or your career interest. Their main aim is to get you one admit and send you off. What you need?: You do not need any consultancy to help you, you need only some advice and guidance from the people who are already in German...

How to spend less, when you are studying abroad?

When you are studying abroad, one of the toughest things is to NOT SPEND more; because till now you would have got your pocket money from your parents and there is a high chance that you wouldn't have managed the expenses till now. But, when you live abroad you are burdened with all the groceries, clothes, etc., that you have buy on your own and you gotta manage it well.  Trust me, it is going to be difficult. I have seen many people, who have the new-found liberty to spend as they wish and at the end of the semester, they will be asking for money again from their parents. I wish that, you will not be in this position. The main reason for this is, you are in a new financial system, with new currency and different pricing methods.  You may think that, studying abroad and living alone will train you to be an successful adult. In reality, the money management process comes as the first step that you will be taking towards becoming an adult. So, here are some tips that...

ADAPTING TO THE GERMAN ENVIRONMENT AND OVERCOMING HOME-SICKNESS

Every year there are tremendous increase in the number of students coming abroad for their education. I have seen so many students opting for Germany as their destination for pursuing Masters. Many of these students are very eager to know the German life and how to adapt to these conditions. For most of them, it is going to be a first experience outside their home country, so based on my own experiences, i would like to give some tips and tricks for those who are coming to Germany for the first time.  First and foremost, it is going to be tough to adapt to the food habits. As a student from India, i have experienced a lot of these. To begin with, we cannot find more Indian restaurants and even though when you find one, all are costly and we cannot compare the taste of the dishes prepared in these restaurants, to the one's we used to have in India. Because, these restaurants are mainly for the local people, who want to explore the Indian cuisine and hence most of the dishes ar...

Which country is better? Germany VS Singapore | Masters studies | MS course

Germany VS Singapore Deciding a path to choose, when you have lot of options in hand is very difficult. When you are applying for Masters studies, there would be a lot of confusion in terms of which country to apply for and there was a question in Quora regarding Germany VS Singapore. Trust me, even I was in the same dilemma when I wanted to pursue my Masters course. Let me throw some light on the analysis that I had done, based on my experience in Germany(Masters studies) and my observations from my friends who are studying in Singapore. Climate:   Are you a person who likes Winters to be cold(around 0 degree Celsius)? Are you a person who likes to just have 2 months of Summer? If you’re from a tropical country, then there is high possibility that you will not like Germany’s climate, but on the other hand Singapore has similar tropical conditions, which makes it easier to adapt.  Winner:  Singapore Course duration:  Most of the courses...
