16 points you need to know before deciding to study in Germany

  1. There are no ranking systems in place, to measure the universities
  2. The course you want to do is more important than the fame of the university
  3. No one will spoon feed you with respect to the subjects/labs that you should take to complete your course
  4. Most of the times, attendance are not taken in the class
  5. The Professors don’t care, if you attend the class or not
  6. The exams do not have a common pattern - meaning, XYZ subject can have the exam for 90 marks with a duration of 2 hours, whereas ABC subject can have the exam for 32 marks with a duration of 90 minutes.
  7. Other than the written exams, there can be oral exams, just projects where you need to give a presentation to get the marks
  8. You have the liberty to decide, which subject you want to study this semester and you can opt out of the examination even before 7 days of the exam date.
  9. Most of the times, you only have 2–3 attempts to clear/pass a subject - If you fail more than this, you will be thrown out of the course
  10. You definitely need to learn German language
  11. It is very common to pursue PhD after your Masters - If you have the interest towards the subject, you can easily opt for it
  12. Germany has lot of research institutes and they do pay well(depends on the stipend and institute)
  13. Do not worry about jobs while you apply to universities - because you really cannot do much, than applying for the right course.
  14. Job scenario is much different in Germany - Most of the companies put their job openings online and you may have to clear phone interviews and couple of face to face interviews
  15. The job interviews will not test your certificates, but the knowledge that you have gained via your internships, thesis, etc.,
  16. Once you graduate, you are eligible to avail 18 months of job search visa in which you can search for jobs across Europe.
